Malte Frey is a painter and scholar of anime, cyberpunk and posthumanism, who lives and works in Düsseldorf, Germany.
He studied fine arts, art education, and Protestant religious education at the Münster Academy of Fine Arts, the University of Münster, and the Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts. After completing his master's degree under Prof. Klaus Merkel, he worked as a freelance artist and in 2020 began his dissertation on concepts of subjectivity in the post-cyberpunk anime series Ghost in the Shell (2002–2015) and Psycho-Pass (2012–2019) entitled:
"In the Wake of Ghost in the Shell. Concepts of Subjectivity in Production I.G's Post-Cyberpunk Anime"
The dissertation has been funded by the Friedrich Ebert Foundation since 2023.
When Malte is not writing or painting, he watches far too much television.
